Designed for Sustainability

Plastic pollution

Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing global environmental challenges, with adhesives playing a hidden role in

microplastic contamination. Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) used in labels and tapes often contain non-degradable

components that persist in the environment, disrupting recycling systems and contributing to long-term pollution. The EU

aims to cut microplastic releases by 30% by 2030, and global regulatory trends are increasingly targeting unsustainable

packaging materials.

BALK™ directly addresses these challenges by providing a fully biodegradable and compostable PSA alternative, ensuring that adhesive residues no longer hinder recyclability or contribute to plastic waste accumulation.

Eliminating Microplastic Waste

Plastic pollution, especially in the form of microplastics, poses a growing environmental crisis that contaminates ecosystems

and food chains. Conventional pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), commonly used in packaging, labels, and disposable

consumer products, exacerbate this issue since they do not break down naturally. Industries with high adhesive consumption—such as food packaging, healthcare, and logistics—are increasingly shifting toward sustainable alternatives.

By BALK™ adopting bio-based PSAs, it fully decomposes into non-toxic organic matter, effectively eliminating microplastic residues. Companies can significantly reduce their long-term environmental impact and contribute to a cleaner, plastic-free future.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

Traditional pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are primarily made from fossil-based materials like acrylics and silicones, resulting in significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout their lifecycle.

BALK™ biodegradable PSAs are produced from renewable plant-based no grain raw materials, which reduces reliance on petrochemical feedstocks and enhances carbon sequestration. BALK is currently undergoing an ISO 14067 carbon footprint assessment and verification.

Empowering Circular Economy

Waste disposal continues to be a significant challenge in adhesive applications, as traditional pressure-sensitive adhesives

(PSAs) contaminate recycling streams and persist in landfills.

BALK™ bio-based PSAs are designed to meet stringent requirements for compostable and biodegradable products. Under composting conditions, our adhesives break down rapidly, transforming into organic fertilizers that enhance soil quality and promote resource circularity.

BALK™ is currently conducting industrial and home composting tests based on internationally recognized standards.
